As part of their desire to make Büsum an even more attractive resort for families, the local authorities decided that Pearl Bay would be the ideal place to create an artificial, 25-acre sandbank. Completed in June 1972, the sandbank can be reached over a pedestrian causeway that divides the stretch of water between the sandbank and the mainland into two large lagoons for bathing and paddling.
